This allows the gear shift to move freely.
Once the car’s systems are functioning again, the normal lock mechanism resumes operation.
Step-by-Step Guide: Using the Shift Lock Release

While designs vary slightly between vehicles, the general process usually looks like this:
1. Turn the Ignition to the “On” Position
Even if the engine cannot start, turning the key or pressing the start button may activate some electrical systems.

This step is important for safety. The parking brake helps ensure the vehicle does not roll unexpectedly once it shifts out of Park.
3. Locate the Slot or Small Cover
Most vehicles place the shift lock release slot near the gear shifter. Some models cover it with a small plastic cap that can be removed.
4. Insert a Small Tool
Drivers can usually use a car key, pen, or small screwdriver to press the release mechanism inside the slot.
5. Move the Gear Shifter
While pressing the release, gently move the gear shifter out of Park and into Neutral.
Once the car is in Neutral, it can be pushed, rolled, or loaded onto a tow truck if necessary.
